The first complete rainy season since
purchasing the finca presented the ideal
opportunity for the planting of numerous
tropical fruit trees, coffee plants, and
other fruit and vegetable crops.
Over 500 trees including
passion fruit, guava, star fruit, oranges,
grapefruits, limes, lemons, avocados,
cashews, guanavano, water apples, papayas,
several varieties of mangos, and many others
were planted. Also planted were hearts of
palm, bananas, plantains, pineapples (you
just take the cut off tops, peel off a few
leaves the expose the rootlets, and stick
them in the ground – really), coconut palms,
and guadua (giant bamboo for construction
material)
Beans, squash, melons, and
other vegetables have also been planted in
anticipation of our 2nd annual fiesta to
benefit the neighboring school.
The 1,800 gallon water
tank was sunk 2/3 of the way into the ground
and a wooden roof will soon be built to
cover the tank, keeping the water cool and
the tank from view.
Our new ½ mile access road
is holding up remarkably well, but a few
bank areas consisting of loose soil began to
erode, and we quickly had our crew plant a
variety of species with fibrous roots that
soak up water. We also made a handful of
proactive re-enforcements to some of the
wing walls situated above the drainage
washes that cross under our road. The
living fence is growing like crazy and is
also stabilizing the edges of the roadbed.
Site lines for all the
lots continue to be maintained in order to
preserve scenic ocean and mountain views.
Any noteworthy species are spared the blade
of the machetes. Additional trails to
various points of interest on the finca have
also been established, and those
pre-existing have been maintained.
